Fundraising and Fun-Raising ~ Past & Present!
We
have done very well in Fundraising and Fun-raising in recent years. In February,
2005, we hosted a Mission Beach Photographic History Night at The Catamaran Hotel where we raised $1,500 for summer scholarships
for kids at Santa Clara Recreation
Center.
Three
other fundraising events had community safety for goals: Our “Eyes for Our Guys” community party and
silent auction held in April, 2005, at The Pennant raised money for the fire department. We purchased a thermal imager plus
training for our local fire station #21 for $9,922. Our “Endless Summer” party held in September, 2005,
at the Clubhouse raised money for the lifeguards and gave us a $2,232 head start for our next funding goal to purchase a lifeguard
tower for Mission Beach.
We held another fundraiser at the Pennant in April, 2006, to continue our efforts to raise money for the lifeguards, and we
were able to present the lifeguards with a check for $9,000 for a new portable lifeguard tower. The Fire Department
and Lifeguards held a special recognition event at the beach in our honor. For our fundraisers, we collected some great silent
auction items from area businesses. The beauty of the format of the parties is that the community turns out to bid on our
auction items, so we are able to bring in money from the community to meet funding goals.
We
have also had some great fun-raising activities in recent years. We have held summer community games nights when we
opened up our clubhouse for a “bring your own card or domino game night.” We also held other summer casual
gatherings at the clubhouse, and we have had several nights at the theater.
A new
event in 2006 was a March 17th Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner/Dance. We had lots of St. Patrick’s Day fun with a DJ,
entertainment by Irish Step Dancers, and delicious Irish food fare. There were shamrock decorations and table centerpieces
crafted from cabbage and carrots. All the ingredients added up to a memorable evening.
Our
fall kick-off party in September 2006 was a great success and featured Margaritaville music with a great three-piece band,
delicious food, and colorful decorations. We raised $1,625 at the silent auction to provide funds for holiday gifts
to the community.
We’re really excited about our 4th annual Spring Fundraiser. “Keep Safety in Sight ~ Light
up the Night” was the theme and the party and auction was held Saturday, March 24th at The Pennant in
Mission Beach. Our goal was to raise $10,000 for this community improvement project, and we exceeded
our goal by more than $2,000!

Our clubhouse
has become quite a popular place to rent for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and meetings. In addition, we utilize
a new fundraising plan by offering our parking spaces when the clubhouse was not being used. Not only has it brought
in some extra rental income, it also provides much needed summer parking for the community.
The clubhouse is run by
volunteer members who maintain the garden and perform other house tasks. Our Rental Chairman has put in countless hours administering
rental contracts, and our House Chairman has worked tirelessly on many renovation projects.
Speaking of house renovations,
in addition to repainting the clubhouse in April, we’ve recently added new awnings and a new front door, which meets
ADA
requirements. With new paint, new doors, a newly repaved parking area, and new
landscaping and awnings, our old clubhouse is looking really great.
With
our rental income, we were able to budget $4,000 in the club year 2005-06 to be given to 20 community agencies and groups
that had been researched by our Giving Committee. Club projects included assembling “We Care Boxes” for
Meals on Wheels and toiletry bags as holiday gifts for the Center for Community Solutions. Other donations included
support for Breast Cancer Awareness, Humane Society animal rescue, Salvation Army Homeless program, Hospice, Salk Research
Institute, Beach Clean-up, Women’s History, Adopt-A-Senior for the Holidays, the UCSD Birthing Rooms, Center for Community
Solutions Domestic Abuse Shelters, and Summer BBQ’s for the police at the beach. We also reached out nationally with
Katrina donations and internationally with support of the Heifer Project. We hope to be able to give more this year.
Our
members have a strong commitment to helping kids. In addition to the $1,500 given to the scholarship program at Santa Clara Recreation Center
in 2005, we gave $1,500 to the Polinsky Center
where the majority of the funds went to a rewards program to encourage the children to try hard in their school program. In
recent years we have also sent donations to the Center for Community Solutions for Back-to-School supplies, Stand up for Kids,
the Jetty Kids Program, Children’s Dental Health Association, and a scholarship for DePortola School.
Our
members work hard to help our Mission Beach
community, and we have fun while we work. We welcome new members who want to participate.
